Des Moines, a medical marijuana law that is quite focused, has now been formally implemented in Iowa. The advocates are now seeing how they can expand access to the drug by the ones who are chronically ill. The lawmakers in the state approved the legislation, which allowed usage of cannabis oil to cure epilepsy.
The law is primarily driven by mothers of children suffering from epilepsy and there are very strict rules for acquisition of the oil including the requirement of a registration card issued by the state and then the oil must be bought from another producing state.

Joe Bolkcom, State Senator and a Democrat from Iowa City, mentioned that the bill, which he sponsored, would be the first step towards the formulation of a more comprehensive law related to medical marijuana. The previous efforts made by Bolkcom were unsuccessful and he now hopes that by the year 2015 he will get bipartisan support. Other members who had supported the effort got a lot of feedback positive in nature from fellow Iowans about the same. Now, people are more informed.

He did not even vote for the bill, which supposedly passed this year as he was of the feeling that it sent a wrong message to the youngsters about drug use.

As of now, marijuana remains to be an illegal drug at the federal level, but the President Barack Obama’s team has clarified that it is not actually worth their time to go through the people using the drug in compliance of the state laws.
